Former Memorial Middle School coach Jayson “Jay” Wilson of Columbus, Georgia has sadly passed away. He died at the age of 59 after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday 21st May 2024 at his residence surrounded by his beloved family. He was confirmed dead through various publications made on social media by family and loved ones. He was born on February 14, 1965.
Jay Wilson Career
He was a dedicated and committed coach who served as an athletics director since the inception of Memorial Middle School in 2007. He had a cheerful personality that attracted many people. He had a special way of guiding his student and that made them love to be around him. His smile was contagious and will be deeply missed by those who knew him.
The Veterans Memorial Middle School Gym received unanimous approval from the Muscogee County School Board in December 2023 to change its name. Since the facility’s opening in 2007, Coach Jay Wilson has remained at Veterans Memorial Middle. Having served as the sole athletic director and girls basketball coach for the school for 22 years, he is being recognized in a place where his name and morals will live on forever.
Coach Jay Wilson has been diagnosed with stage four cancer, but he still manages to grin and inspire everyone around him. He’s been described as the school’s heart and soul.
The gym, which he considered his second home, will now always be known as Coach Jay Wilson Court. Although Coach Wilson was well-known for his achievements in the classroom and on the court. In our neighborhood, Coach Jay Wilson has had an impact on numerous generations of families.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, May 24, 2024 at Britt David Baptist Church with Pastor Tim Jones officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM, Thursday, May 23, 2024 at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. Interment will be held following the service at Parkhill Cemetery.
