Carroll Township Fire Chief John Brough has sadly passed away. He died on Sunday 19th May 2024 surrounded by his beloved family. The fire department announced his death on Tuesday through a Facebook that said “Carroll Township EMS & Fire Department is deeply saddened to announce the death of Fire Chief John Brough, who passed away on Sunday, 19 May.” The actual cause of John Brough’s death has not been made known at the time this report was made.
Who was John Brough?
John’s journey began at a time when the concept of an organized emergency response system was still in its infancy. Demonstrating remarkable foresight and dedication, he was among the first citizens of Carroll Township to receive training as both an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and a firefighter. This dual expertise set a new standard for emergency responders in the area, highlighting the importance of comprehensive training in saving lives and protecting property.
In 1979, recognizing the need for a formal and organized fire department, John Brough was instrumental in the founding of the Carroll Township Fire Department. As a Charter Member, he played a critical role in establishing the department’s foundational principles and operational procedures. His contributions were not just in the realm of emergency response; he also focused on community education, prevention strategies, and the importance of public safety infrastructure.
John’s tenure with the Carroll Township Fire Department spanned an impressive 45 years, a testament to his unwavering commitment to public service. For over a decade, he served as the Fire Chief, leading the department with distinction. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, 29 May, from 2-8pm at Crosser Funeral Home in Oak Harbor (301 N. Locust Street). A funeral service will be held on Thursday, 30 May, beginning at 11am at LaPointe United Methodist Church (7325 W. Harbor Road Port Clinton, OH 43452). John will be laid to rest at Locust Point Cemetery in Carrol Township.
