Who was David Lamm?
David Lamm’s first byline appeared in his hometown newspaper, the Rocky Mount (N.C.) Evening Telegram, in March of 1961. Now, more than 57 years later, David is still cranking out commentaries for Jacksonville sports talk station, 1010XL AM. David began his career in earnest as sports editor of the Wilson (N.C.) Daily Times (1966-68), then worked briefly in High Point, N.C. before a 10-year run in Greensboro, N.C.
He moved to Jacksonville in 1977 and became sports editor of the Florida Times-Union. He transitioned to radio and TV in 1983. He did a 30-minute TV show for 18 years, mostly on the Sun Network. He worked morning radio for 30 years, the last 20 as host of the “Lamm at Large” show (1991-2010). He semi-retired in 2011 and continues to do his daily rant. David attended UNC-Chapel and the N.C. Wesleyan College before taking the Wilson job.
David has been married to Ellen for 52 years and has two sons and five grandsons. He’s a moderate conservative who loved playing golf until two knee replacements, two neck surgeries and five back surgeries ended his playing days in 2014. He loves travelling, reading and the movies. If you invited him for dinner, shrimp, Eastern North Carolina barbeque, meatloaf, fried chicken and fried okra will have him going back for seconds.
