The M4 motorway in South Wales has reopened in both directions after a police incident that resulted in significant delays. Following the incident, it was closed westbound between junctions 37 and 38, Porthcawl to Margam. Tailbacks were observed for approximately 4.3 km (2.7 miles) in the west and around 6 km (3.7 miles) in the east. The situation “has now been resolved,” according to South Wales Police, and the road has reopened as of Thursday night.
“Proceed with caution while the congestion eases,” the police advised drivers. The police had earlier requested that motorists stay in their cars and give emergency service vehicles priority on the hard shoulder. Traffic monitoring system INRIX said that although a diversion had been implemented via Pyle, close to junction 37, traffic was extremely congested along those routes as cars attempted to find an alternate route.
According to witnesses, someone took his own life after jumping off a bridge. The identity of the person has not been released by the authorities at the time of this public and the circumstances surrounding the incident are currently unknown as few details were released by the responding officers.
