A tragic accident on Interstate 680 resulted in the death of 3-year-old Elijah Dunn of San Ramon, who was struck by a suspected drunk driver. The family’s car had run out of gas and was parked on the shoulder when it was hit from behind by an SUV driven by Yarenit Malihan, 38, of Pleasanton. Elijah was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Oakland but did not survive his injuries.
His mother and two siblings were also injured and taken to hospitals. Elijah, who was enrolled at Karina’s Daycare & Preschool, was described as a sweet and lovable child. He was excited about his upcoming birthday. The family’s grief was expressed by the daycare’s owner and Elijah’s grandmother.
Malihan was arrested on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter and taken to a detention facility after receiving medical treatment. The accident’s severity led to the mother sustaining serious injuries, including broken bones, while the siblings were less severely injured. Authorities noted Malihan had no prior DUI convictions and was driving with a valid license at the time of the incident.
