A man opened fire on his family, killing three women and injuring his son before turning the gun on himself. County police reported receiving several 911 calls around 10 p.m. Thursday regarding gunshots at a house on the 6900 block of Norwood Ferry. Upon entering the home, officers found the bodies of three women, two critically injured men, and an unharmed juvenile.
On Friday, police identified the suspect as 61-year-old Nayyar Abbas Syed, who died overnight at St. Agnes Hospital. The deceased women were identified as Syed’s wife, Syeda Aalia Nayyar, 57; their daughter, Syeda Fatima, 25; and their daughter-in-law, Alizey Fatima, 33. Syed’s son, Muhammad Ali Hamza, 31, was critically injured and taken to Shock Trauma, police said.
Hamza’s 3-month-old daughter, who was in the house at the time of the shooting, was unharmed and placed into the care of a relative. Police noted that dispatchers also received a call from Syed himself. All family members lived in the townhome together, except for Syed, who was believed to routinely visit. Investigators found no signs of forced entry.
As Hamza remains in the hospital, his daughter has been placed in the care of a family member. The motive remains under investigation. No further information has been released at this time.
