Popular MMA and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Fighter Geane Carlos Herrera has passed away. He died on Saturday 18th May 2024 after being involved in a tragic motorcycle accident. He was confirmed dead on Sunday through a post made on Facebook that reads “I just heard from multiple people that former UFC and Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship fighter Geane Carlos Herrera passed away in a motorcycle accident. He was just 33 years old.” As at the time this report was made, further information regarding what led to the accident has not been disclosed.
Geane Herrera Birth
Herrera’s journey from a small town in California to the octagon of the UFC is a tale of perseverance, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of his dreams. Born in Duarte, California, Herrera moved to Cali, Colombia with his mother and sister when he was just a baby. The family spent nine formative years in Colombia before returning to the United States, an experience that would shape Herrera’s outlook and determination. In March 2011, Herrera made his professional mixed martial arts debut, stepping into the cage for the first time in a regional promotion. Competing primarily in the Southeastern United States, Herrera quickly made a name for himself.
His dedication to training and natural talent were evident as he amassed an undefeated record of 8-0. This impressive streak caught the attention of larger promotions, and after a notable first-round finish of Josh Rave in July 2014, Herrera was signed by the UFC. Herrera’s UFC debut came on August 8, 2015, at UFC Fight Night 73, where he faced Ray Borg. Despite a valiant effort, Herrera lost the fight by unanimous decision. However, this setback did not deter him.
Geane Herrera Career
In December 2015, Herrera was called upon as a short-notice replacement to fight Joby Sanchez at The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale. Stepping in for Justin Scoggins, Herrera seized the opportunity to showcase his skills. After a competitive two rounds, Herrera secured a TKO finish in the final minute of the second round, marking his first victory in the UFC. Herrera’s next challenge came against Ali Bagautinov on June 18, 2016, at UFC Fight Night 89. Despite his best efforts, Herrera lost the fight via unanimous decision. Determined to bounce back, he faced Ben Nguyen on November 27, 2016, at UFC Fight Night 101. Once again, Herrera fought hard but was defeated by unanimous decision. Following the loss to Nguyen, Herrera was released from the UFC, ending his tenure with the promotion.
